Processing of taconite consists of crushing and grinding the ore to liberate iron-bearing particles, concentrating the ore by separating the particles from the waste material (gangue), and pelletizing the iron ore concentrate. A simplified flow diagram of these processing steps is shown in Figure 11.23-1.

Known as taconite pellets, these balls are shipped by rail to the ore dock where the railcars deposit them into bins within the dock. Once a freighter is ready to be loaded, chutes from the ore dock bins are lowered into the cargo hatches, and a door at the bottom of the bin is raised, permitting the pellets to roll into the ship. ...

What are taconite tailings used for? It is a very hard rock containing low-grade iron ore used to make iron and steel. Using explosives, taconite is blasted into pieces that are then crushed into smaller pieces at a processing plant. After the iron ore is separated from the taconite, the tailings are the remaining by-product.

Traditional taconite pellet-making processes use a rod mill to get the rock to the consistency of coarse sand, and a ball mill to grind the rock into a fine powder. To process taconite, the ore is ground into a fine powder, the magnetite is separated from the gangue by strong magnets, and the powdered iron concentrate is combined with a binder such as bentonite clay and limestone as a flux. As a last step, it is rolled into pellets about 10 millimeters in diameter that contain about 65% iron.
