
1. Never use finely crushed stone. I has materials left over from a sidewalk project I dumped in the driveway. That stuff sticks to shoes and tracks all over the house. Installed over a base of larger stones, it will last almost forever with nothing but a periodic topping up. Even a truckload of crushed stone and gravel dumped on top of your existing driveway and raked smooth will last a long, long time. Gravel Driveway, Drainage problem. I have a gravel driveway on a slope. Rainswater makes ruts and carries away the gravel and base into the back yard. I have made some swales and "speed bumps" to divert the water, but I need something more effective. The drive is ~30 years old. I was not here then, but it has a very good base of crushed stone.

It got rid of the fines and brought back the full size gravel down under. If I have ridges in the drive I have a 6" pipe about 6' long with chains welded to it that I drag the drive with. Next two inches of decomposed granite are added, leveled and then is rolled flat. At this point the stabilizer is applied evenly to the surface. It doesn't need to penetrate deeply - a half inch is plenty. A Vibraplate machine is then used to compact the decomposed granite surface. A final application of stabilizer completes the project.

In our rural parts, nearly everyone has gravel. Next step up is asphalt and then concrete in various forms. I'd say for every 100 gravel driveways, there are 15 asphalt and 2 concrete. Then again, these aren't million dollar homes. :) Anyway, no one in this region has crushed granite. What I can say about gravel is that weeds love to grow in it.

Yes, about 150' elevation gain on the driveway. About 2/3rds are concrete with gravel on the side. Then at the bottom is a bridge which floods about once a year (about 2' over it this time) and then gravel for the next 400'. That's where we lost most of the crushed stone. We are going to put in concrete later this month.
