Field Trips - The Gemmological Association of Great Britain

Coloured sapphires collected over a period of 40 years in The Gemfields of Queensland by Peter Brown of the Rubyvale Gem Gallery. Alan, a lively Stranraer émigré, took us round an underground sapphire mine in Rubyvale. Prospectors first dug one metre diameter vertical shafts through 'shin cracker' overburden (sandy gravels).

Sapphire Mining at Glenalva, The Gemfields, Queensland. During this process Myrna found several nice sapphires. We took one in particular to a lapidist who said it was good enough to have it facetted. Yippee! It is referred to as a "party coloured sapphire" because it has multiples colours such as yellows and reds.
