In a hammermill, the screen-hole diameter controls the maximum finished particle size of any ground product. When using roller mills, there is no screen being used, and unless the product is sifted and the coarse fraction reprocessed, the resultant particle size is purely reliant on the miller's skill in setting the roller mill effectively.

The malting process is a vital step in beer making as it is when the sugars are fermented into beer. Barley is popularly used to brew beer, but the starch in barley is not ready for fermentation. It has to be converted into malted barley, where it is soaked and allowed to germinate. Heat is then applied to stop the grain from growing into new ...

The useful soft resins and oils comprise less than 15% of the hops. Some consider the proteins and tannins of the hop to be important in brewing although most of these in beer come from the malt. Even if as much as one-half of the hop proteins and tannins are important this only raises the level of useful compounds in the hop to about 24%.

You can easily brew 5 gallons of beer of up to 6-7% alcohol. Bigger systems are also available. They all come with a grain basket with a false bottom that lets the wort go out in the kettle. A pump makes the wort go back in the grain basket. So you mash and recirculate at the same time! After that, you only need to lift the grain basket to sparge.

If you are not into all grain brewing, any specialty malt can be used in a steeping bag. Steep the grain at a ratio of 1 lb. (0.45 kg) to 1.5 quarts (1.4 L) of water at 150-160 ºF (66-71 ºC) for 20 minutes. This may not seem like a lot of water, but diluting the grain too much can leach tannins and acids into the water.

Good advice S O's. I don't have a mill but have put grain through a coffee grinder but came out too fine. I think I'll take your advice and just crack a little extra grain. As i said I'm generally happy with the end product but I would like to get a bit more mouth feel. I am brewing under pressure and using CO2 to carbonate in kegs.

This system is also compatible with grist and hammer mill equipment within the brewery and distillery processing industry. It monitors particle sizes and triggers an alarm if particle sizes of grists are too large which indicates a sieve rupture. Replacing sieves early prevents faulty batches and reduces loss.

For oven drying, place the spent grain on a sheet tray about ¼-inch thick and place the grain in a 175-degree oven for about six hours. During the drying process, you'll want to turn over the grains to ensure that the moisture decreases evenly. If you dry the grain at too high of a temperature, you may darken the color.

The Classicmill's main advantages: During milling, forced ventilation occurs inside the milling chamber. This limits the temperature increase observed with other hammermills (vertical shaft type). By limiting the temperature increase, the classicmill is ideal for the milling of adjuncts with higher moisture content up to 15 % (e.g. barley).
